On the way to work this morning I encountered a confusing bumper sticker. It read, "My cat saves lives. He's neutered." And on the other end of the bumper? You guessed it, "My cat saves lives. She's spayed." Huh?

I mean, don't get me wrong. I'm down with Bob Barker. I'm all about controlling the pet population by getting pets spayed or neutered. But how does this save lives? We all know that having her ovaries removed isn't going to turn a cat into Superman or a heart surgeon or something. And neither will an extra litter of kittens running around suck up too much oxygen and kill off a few people.

Or maybe it's cat lives they're talking about. But then again, I'm guessing that somebody that took the time and care to put that bumper sticker on their car isn't going to go and drown an unwanted litter of kittens or let them tear about where they can get run over by cars.

Can somebody please explain this to me? Do neutered cats have some sort of special power I don't know about?
